An Exploration of Line

Amanda uses the process of creating intricate line drawings and patterns as a cathartic exercise. The drawings she creates often evolve into biological shapes and forms reflecting her interests and studies in biochemistry and microbiology. The artist has a fascination with the idea that the repetition of a single unit creates objects of variety and beauty and that this is the fundamental makeup of life as we know it. She is inspired by the microscopic building blocks of life which is evident in much of her work.

Other works here are abstract paintings that have been inspired through research into British Constructivism and revolve around the theme of womanhood and pregnancy and, in particular, the artists own relationship with her mother. The work is an exploration by the artist to understand the effectiveness of simple shapes used as language which offer a stark contrast to the intricate decorative work she also pursues. The move into minimal abstract shapes was very purposeful and acts as an ongoing experiment in a reaction against her “self indulgence” seen in other works.
